行行重行行，与君生别离。

相去万余里，各在天一涯。

道路阻且长，会面安可知？

胡马依北风，越鸟巢南枝。

相去日己远，衣带日已缓。

浮云蔽白日，游子不顾反。

思君令人老，岁月忽已晚。

弃捐勿复道，努力加餐饭。

 On and On

On and on, alas, on and on!

Far away from me you are thus gone!

You are away o’er ten thousand li,

A world apart between you and me.

As the way is tough and long, my dear,

Who knows if we can meet this year?

The steeds from Hu would neigh in northern breeze;

The birds from Yue would nest in southern trees.

Day by day, the farther you will go,

Day by day, the thinner I will grow.

As the drifting cloud may shroud the sun,

So the roving man may seek new fun.

Thought of you has made me look so old,

When it comes to me that days are cold.

Do forget about it! Let it be!

I hope you’ll eat your fill and be carefree!

青青河畔草

青青河畔草，郁郁园中柳。

盈盈楼上女，皎皎当窗牖。

娥娥红粉妆，纤纤出素手。

昔为倡家女，今为荡子妇。

荡子行不归，空床独难守。

Green, Green Spreads

Green, green spreads the bank-side grass;

Lush, lush grow the garden willows.

Fine, fine stands upstairs the lass,

Fair, fair her shape behind the windows.

Bright, bright beams her rouged face;

Soft, soft are her pale-skinned hands.

Once a singing-girl with poise and grace,

Now she’s wife to one who roves the lands.

As he wanders in an unknown zone,

It’s hard for her to go to bed alone.

青青陵上柏 

青青陵上柏，磊磊涧中石。

人生天地间，忽如远行客。

斗酒相娱乐，聊厚不为薄。

驱车策驽马，游戏宛与洛。

洛中何郁郁，冠带自相索。

长衢罗夹巷，王侯多第宅。

两官遥相望，双阙百余尺。

极宴娱心意，戚戚何所迫？

Green and Green Grows

Green and green grows the cypress on the mound;

Piles and piles in the streams stones abound.

Men reside between heaven and earth,

Like travellers rushing to their place of birth.

I taste the goblet of wine from the deep cell;

Not quite enough, but I enjoy it well.

I whip my jaded horse that draws my cart,

Seeking pleasure in the Wan and Luo mart.

Luoyang is full of all the hustle and bustle,

Where the capped and belted mandarins tussle.

Long avenues sprout alleys that lead far and near,

Lined with mansions of a prince or a peer.

Two palaces stand on two ends of the street,

Each with two towers of o’er a hundred feet.

Since grand feasts give pleasure to excess,

What is there on earth to cause distress?

今日良宴会

今日良宴会，欢乐难具陈。

弹筝奋异响，新声妙入神。

令德唱高官，识曲听其真。

齐心同所愿，含意俱未申。

人生寄一世，奄忽若飙尘。

何不策高足，先据要路津。

无为守穷贱，轗轲长苦辛。

 I Attend

I attend a sumptuous feast today;

Its mirth and joy are hard for me to say.

When the lute plays a wondrous tone,

The new tunes are the most superb e’er known.

When a sage composes meaningful strains.

Those who know the music find the veins.

The veins are all within the common ken,

But never made overt by any men.

Human beings live the briefest span,

Which fades like dust as soon as it began.

Why not strive hard to the uttermost,

Take up the chance and grasp a powerful post?

There’s no sense sticking to a wretched life

And bearing burdens in an endless strife.

西北有高楼

西北有高楼，上与浮云齐。
交疏结绮窗，阿阁三重阶。
上有弦歌声，音响一何悲！
谁能为此曲，无乃杞梁妻。
清商随风发，中曲正徘徊。
一弹再三叹，慷慨有余哀。
不惜歌者苦，但伤知音稀。
愿为双鸿鹄，奋翅起高飞。

A Lofty Mansion

A lofty mansion towers in the northwest,

Its pointed roof with drifting clouds abreast.

O’er latticed windows hang a satin blind;

Three stairways lead to spacious halls behind.

From upstairs come the sounds of lute and song;

How the music echoes sad and long!

Who on earth can play such painful tune?

Has Qi Liang’s widow been reborn so soon?

The clear Sang tune resounds in evening breeze;

Half way through, it lingers o’er the trees.

One strike on the chord, then come three sighs,

In depressed remorse and sobbing cries.

It’s not her bitter lot that I regret;

I’m sad that bosom friends are rare to get.

Oh that we are a couple of wild swans,

Soaring to the skies ever on and on.
